DMZ CHENIN BLANC 2023

TASTING NOTES

The bouquet is bright and tropical, and the bouquet carries beautifully onto the palate, showing passion fruit, ripe lemon and ripe apple notes. The wine has great texture with a zesty finish.

VINEYARDS

Sourced exclusively from DeMorgenzon’s own Chenin Blanc vineyards. Southerly and South-Easterly aspect vines overlooking False Bay are managed for optimal exposure to gentle morning sunshine. Granitic soils result in grapes with excellent natural acidity and flavour concentration, a trait further enhanced by our intentionally low yields.

VINTAGE

A cool Spring led to a later than usual bud break that was about 2- 3 weeks later than the previous season. The cool weather did cause some issues with uneven budding in Chardonnay however, we were able to mitigate the worst of that with very late pruning. The cool Spring was interspersed with fairly regular rain showers which meant the soil moisture content remained healthy further into the season and by in large we had good healthy vineyard canopies. The regular rain fall did keep our viticultural team on their toes as the disease pressure was higher than normal however, meticulous planning and careful canopy management meant that we arrived at harvest with very healthy fruit.

VINIFICATION AND MATURATION

Cool, early morning harvested grapes were destemmed, crushed, then pressed and the juice settled until clear. Fermentation occurred spontaneously without the addition of commercial yeasts in a combination of stainless steel tanks and old French oak barrels. The resulting wines were racked and sulphured prior to blending and the final blend left on fine yeast lees for maturation until bottling.
